If I buy a used bike privately, should I get it inspected by a mechanic before I buy it?

Question

I plan on requesting a VID for a carfax report before I even view it, but is it excessive to get it inspected? I havent heard of anyone doing this, but once I buy it I cant exactly return it. I could use advice. This will be my first real big purchase , and I dont know much about the paperwork /to do's when buying a vehicle. Thanks

any motor vehicle should be inspected before buying. any seller who has a problem with it must have something to hide, especially if you are paying for it yourself. plus the carfax report is only good up to the day it was issued. what's happened since then.

definitely. if theres nothing wrong with the bike, the seller should have no problem letting you do that, but if he objects, i'd walk away. i've heard of people doing that all the time, so its not as unusual as you think

Personally, Its your life. Your life is at a greater risk when on a motorcycle as oppose to in a car. I think are excessive steps are a nessicity. Who cares what the seller or organization thinks. Its your life not theirs, more power to you.

yes, it will cost you whatever a mechanic charges to do an inspection, but that's better than buying it on the word of the owner and then finding it needs 100's of dollars worth of work...it is not excessive at all

It sure can't hurt. Even so has the bike ever been down?  Is there a pressing reason you can see on the bike that makes you think you need an inspection? If your really suspicious, maybe walk away. There are a lot of bikes for sale and some are clean.

yes just like if you buy a car used you should get it inspected no sense in wasting your money on something that expensive and have it break down on you and besides if there is nothing wrong with it the person selling it wont mind if you have it inspected
