Will it stop digging in the yard and use the box? I am about to move on to army post housing, and we will be leaving him in the fenced in yard for several hours at a time. He always digs when he gets bored, right now we live in a 1 bedroom apartment, and the only time he really gets a chance to dig is if we are at my husbands work i am sitting in the car and he is outside the car with me holding his leash, there is a nice shady area where we park the car and he will sleep for a few minutes then wake up and begin digging and digging. I am scared that he will try to dog his way out of the yard and make lots of noise when we leave him there...help please

  1. VERY smart tactic....

Iv always suggested that to anyone who says they have a digging problem.

although if you just put it out there he may not know and still dig everywhere else.

once you get the sandbox i suggest you buy a clicker at a local pet store for about 3$.

have some treats on hand open the sand box and encourage him in.

as soon as his paw touches the sand or dirt in the box, click the clicker and give him a treat.

praise him and put some toys in to play with as well.

and practice this a few times a day.

and if he ever ever goes to dig anywhere else scold him and put him in a room for a time out.

let him out encourage him into the box click and treat.

    Hope Iv helped.

    Good Luck.

  2. Buying him a sandbox might keep him from digging up your yard, but it isn't going to stop him from trying to escape if he is bored and lonely.

These are two entirely different things.

If he wants out of the yard he won't take his frustrations out on a sand box.

You want a realistic suggestion? Put a free-standing kennel in the yard, on concrete or on gravel with chain link buried underneath. Then you won't have to worry about him digging out of the yard. My Siberians have an acre-sized dog yard -- do you think any of them are loose in it while I'm gone? No. They are in kennels.

He may well make noise if he is bored or lonely, even in the kennel; the only way to cure this is by exercising him a great deal before you leave, and/or giving him something to do while you're gone. Or find him another dog to play with.

Siberians are team dogs, and need buddies. They really don't do well left alone.

  3. I have to warn you.  Huskies are runners, if given the chance he will run away.  I don't know what it is about this breed but it's true.  Please secure him so he cannot run off, you may never see him again.
