If I buy something from someone I know, like a bedroom set for $1000, can I take legal action against them if it breaks after the first day and it seems impossible that they did not know it was faulty? If so, what exactly would I have to do?

It is always "buyer beware" when buying from an individual. It is an "as is" sale. However you can take them to small claims court for a small fee. Go to the clerk of the court office. They will walk you through the process. It is easy.
