If I purchse something in Italy with my debit card, will the money in my account automatically convert to euro for that purchase, or do i convert american dollars before the purchase, and have it in my account already?

  1. The cost will convert in $ and you'll must pay a little for this change.


  2. I am under the impression that the Italians prefer cash, so it is a good idea to use the ATM's (bancomats).  I believe it has to do with their oppressive tax system.

  3. The right amount of american dollars will come out of your account. For example, if you buy something worth 100 euros, $157.605 us dollars will be removed from your account automatically. You don't have to do anything.

  4. your debit card will work. you just tell me ATM how many euros you want and it will be done.  The ATMs in Europe are multilingual. Make sure you let your US bank know that you will be in Europe or your bank's fraud department will freeze your account. Make sure you take the maximum amount allowable for the day. The surcharge on the ATM is the same regardless of size of transaction.

  5. You can find Banco matic machines all over Italy. Put your card in it and select how many Euro's you would like and it will depense the money to you. Like an AMT. Make surre your bank does overseas transactions first. Check with them.
