if you're going to return something that you bought with the credit card, the store that you bought it from automatically putst that money back onto your credit card.

Nope.  It will show up as a debit and a credit.

No. They remain on your bill for the purpose of (as per the official term) an "Audit Trail". The credit card company has to keep track of all transactions, in and out, of your account, and they are responsible to send you a statement showing all such transactions within a reasonable delay from the statement end date.
