If I buy used car from private party, whats the tax & registartion fee in Texas? Can I avoid or decrease tax?

  1. If its a private party you can give them cash or a cashiers check then when you go sign papers you just say the sales price is like a dollar then you will only pay taxes on a dollar.The other party has to agree to this and don't let the notary know about it. This may not be legal so use caution.

    The DMV caught onto his game and they tax based on book value now.

    Even if the low price/great deal is legit, they tax based on book now.

Well on my car I bought for $1200 the tax and registration was like $100 when I went to have it put in my name.  But it's only $54 a year after that.  If the person you're buying it from agrees you can say on the bill of sale you paid $500.  This would decrease the amount of tax, but if I remember correctly the registration part stays the same no matter the value of the vehicle.
