If I cant connect to internet how do I update my Windows xp ?

On my laptop Internet explorer keeps saying "server not found", how can I update my windows xp or which updates I need to fix this when I can't even get on the internet to check??? Btw, my internet connections wifi says I'm connected & have excellent connection but IE won't let me surf.

see if you can get on a computer with an internet connection, go on windows site, and see if it will allow you to save the update to a flash drive or floppy.

You don't need updates to fix it - even XP prior to SP1 could connect to the internet.  (Even Windows 386 could.)  You need to find out why the computer isn't connecting to the internet, and you haven't given enough information to help you (and you may not be able to).  Call your provider's tech support number (you're already paying for this service) for help.

Even though your wifi says connected, your internet itself may be down currently.  You could try connecting your laptop with an ethernet cable directly to your router,

In IE click on FILE then towards the bottom make sure WORK OFFLINE is not checked.

You can always plug into the router directly to check for updates but I am sure its not an update problem.

had a very similar issue with a toshiba laptop recently.  Try this:

shutdown the laptop connect to your router via an ethernet cable.  Turn the laptop on.  

If it connects to your network and the web, the most likely cause of your wireless problem is in the config or hardware.  Compare the wireless config on yours and a working laptop.

If the hardwired connection does not connect to your network and the web you could have a winsock problem.

In my case I tried static addressing the laptop and still could not get on the web.

As a last resort you might try Winsockxpfix (free on the web).  Not an advocate just a satisfied user.
