Question:

If I continually pause and rewind a DVD multiple times (to hear a line again), can the disc become damaged?

I am currently trying to watch Japanese movies/TV shows that I bought on DVD. In order for me to best further my language skills, I am turning the subtitles off and rewinding and listening to certain spoken lines/phrases so that I can catch the words properly. This is causing me to pause and rewind the disc several times for the same spot, usually about 10 seconds' worth.

In short, I am wondering if this will damage the disc. Is there something about the lens or the way a disc is read/spun that rewinding multiple times would cause damage to a disc? Thanks!

  1. To the disc no, to the read head of the DVD player, possibly.  Doing this is hard on cassette tapes because the tape is actually ran over a tape head which creates friction, DVDs are read with light and therefore are not subject to the same type or wear and tear.  But where there is friction there is wear and tear, when rewinding parts, the player needs to re-track and this involves moving the read-assembly which is done mechanically but often high grade graphite based lubricants prevent excessive wear on these parts so you should be fine.

  2. this will not at all damage the disc..

but i guess on multiple times of doing these the player might get spoilt..
