If I convert songs from iTunes into mp3 instead of mp4 format, will I still be able to play them on my iPod?

  1. Your Ipod will play mp3 formatted songs just as well as it plays mp4. It will play pretty much any other non-proprietary format, and it will play it's own proprietary format (M4P) as well.

    As far as changing them back, it depends on what you actually meant...are you converting from MP4 or M4P? Yeah, there is a difference. You can change back and forth from MP4 to MP3, but you will lose quality each time, so it is generally better to simply create a new MP3 file instead of completely converting and disposing of the old.

    If you are talking about M4P...those are protected songs that you purchased from iTunes. Those songs cannot directly be converted to MP3, and an MP3 will not be converted into an M4P on your machine (wouldn't make any sense to do that anyway). The most effective way to convert to an MP3 from an M4P is to burn an MP3 disc in iTunes.
