  1. I've heard really bad things about Locks of Love, that they sell most of the hair for profit and so it doesn't really go to cancer patients. I just did a Google search and apparently they don't give the wigs to kids with cancer either - they sell them to the kids! How awful is that!

I did read that Diane Lane donated her hair to Pantene's Great Lengths program. The charity is called HairUWear.

    Hope this helps!

  2. Here is the application directly from their website.  (see sources)

    1. They charge everyone except the very very poor for the wigs they 'provide'.

    2. They make children (or their parents) ask family members, teachers, and/or friends write letters of recommendation telling how the children will benefit fro the hairpieces.

    3. They ask for pictures of the children bald and post them on their website (although I'm sure it has to be posted with permission).

Here are some other facts I found:

They say they collect 2000 ponytails a week, that's 104,000 ponytails a year. It takes 6 to 10 ponytails to make one wig. If we say 10 that would be 10,400 wigs per year. The have been in business since 1997 or 1998 and have only made 2000 wigs in almost 10 years. In 2005 they made less than 300.

Still, they do help children who could not otherwise afford it a good hairpiece (retailing for $3500-$6000) for no more than $1000 (according to the website).

  3. No, but Locks of Love will send you a thank you card.

  4. Locks of Love gets way more hair then they can use, and they sell the extra hair to wig companies, who make a huge profit on them. They also do not "give away" wigs to children - most wigs are sold to the families of children who need them. Just realize this before you go cutting your hair off.

  5. No.

I donated 10 inches...but you never find out who.

But, you should still donate, because it helps someone out there.

  6. I doubt so. I mean, if who you donated to wants too ... you will. But I highly doubt so. If you wanted to know, don't be disappointed. If you keep doing it, one day the person donated will want to meet you. But sometimes workers don't tell the people donated who the hair came from. So, keep donating.

  7. NO, when I donated 7 inches of hair, I just got a post card thanking me for donating my hair.

  8. No.  From the official website:

    Q. Can I meet the child who receives my hair?

    A. We cannot link donors with recipients for two reasons:

       1. Because 6-10 ponytails go into one hairpiece, tracking each ponytail would not be financially feasible.

       2. Because all applicants are minors, we must protect the children’s privacy.

    Citation below...

  9. no

  10. Probably NOT, unless the donor wishes to be revealed.

Most donors are grateful to get the gift, but are embarrassed.

Just know that someone that desperately needs it will get it.

  11. Probably not.  It takes six to eight good ponytails to make a wig, and the hair cuts cut and dyed in batches.

  12. No but do it, it really makes people who are suffering feel a little better about themselves. I'm going to donate 15 inches in May.
