Do every Navy people have to do a submarine gig? If not, what section of the US Navy requires you to, if there is such thing?

What about other countries' Navy?

  1. nope.  strictly voluntary, and the physical requirements are actually more stringent.  for instance, a friend of ours was DQ'd from sub duty because he has migraines.

  2. you have to ask to go on a submarine

  3. just cause you sign up doesn't mean you go on a sub. you can volunteer to do it or if they need you to they put you there

  4. Submarine service is entirely voluntary.  You cannot be assigned to a submarine unless you request it.  If you ever do decide to be assigned to a sub and decide you don't like it, you will be transfered off.

The only section of the Navy required to serve on subs are submariners ;)

  5. If you want submarine duty you have to sign up for it. Just be sure that's what you want. You'll be deployed and under water for months at a time, and there ain't no windows either.

  6. In the US submarine duty is voluntary.  You can not be assigned to submarine duty unless you have specifically and officially volunteer in writing and it is in you service record.  Obviously one has to have a rating that is of use on a submarine.  Non-nuclear trained personnel have to successfully complete submarine school where nuclear power trained personnel have to successfully complete the nuclear power pipeline.

Submarine duty for our allies is also voluntary.

  7. You have to sign up specifically for submarine duty, they don't (from what I know) stick you on a submarine against your will.

  8. Submarine duty is strictly volunteer in the USN.  Certain NECs, however, are more likely to get you on a sub.  SEAL (you wouldn't be ship's company; you'd just be hitching a ride), Nuclear propulsion, Torpedoman, Sonarman, and certain other rates are high on the list.

There's a physical you have to pass to even be considered for submarine duty; they don't just draft you into it.

Other countries, however, may not go strictly volunteer.

  9. The Silent Service or Submarine service is a volunteer service.  You volunteer for it.  There however other jobs that might get you on a sub.  SEAL ranks as one of the highest.

  10. You have to volunteer for submarine duty.

Then you have to pass Submarine School.

Last but not least you have to sign up for 6 years,

not just 2 for some specialties.

  11. You must request submarine duty.
