  1. If what you have is a small portable generator just install a double pole double throw switch. Connect the supply wire to your main breaker, at the center of the 2Pdt switch. The existing power lines may installed at the top of the 2pdt switch and the lines from your alternator at the bottom 2PDT switch terminals. A synchronizing setup is quite a costly investment and your generator may burn if not properly synchronized.Your generator should be AC type in order to match with the electricity supplied by the power company. You might need the services of an electrician.

  2. billrussel42 is correct, if you want to generate power and be on the grid. it is not the power companys rules though. it is the governments rules. anyone on the national power grid must conform. if you are generating power the company must pay you for it. you will still pay them the same amount every month that you are paying them right now.. every month they will pay you for what little bit of power you generate.  they wont s***w you on the price, the government sets the price per KWH.

if you want to make power and use it, isolate yourself from the grid. have three setups. one that disconnects your house from the grid for good power generator days and emergency. have another that disconnects a portion of the house that you can fully and reliable generate power for. of course, it will be good to be able to reconnect the whole house to the grid because i doubt you can generate power more reliably than money hungry big business.

why does everyone want to generate power? you would get a GREAT return on your money if you buy new windows or insulation. not solar panels. not wind power. if you want to generate electricity you need a small river. if you dont have one of those, the only other thing worth money is an anaerobic digester. they make natural gas out of rotting compost. they are very popular in third world countries. that is what they use to heat and cook. and once you build it, it should not cost any money!. just dump rotting c**p in it. they dont even smell because the gas is being collected.

  3. Very carefully!

There is special equipment wit a special inverter that does this. Depending on the power company, one of these may happen:

The power company may say no, you can't do that

The power company may say ok, but they supply the equipment, you pay, only a qualified electrician can install it.

The power company may say ok, here is a list of approved equipment, you buy it, only a qualified electrician can install it.

edit. I think Raist and I are talking about different countries. In the US, the individual electric companies control what is connected to their grid. And there are a bunch of state and local laws that may apply also.
