If I get a B.S. in mechanical engineering, can I get an M.S. in a different field?

So, do I have to specialize, going further down the mechanical engineering path? Or can I jump into a different engineering discipline, like electrical, or computer engineering? Is that sort of switch common, or just not possible?

  1. That will b difficult ,since the basic lines r different. If u Continue in the

same line U will b perfect n able to go for research /Doctorate further more.

  2. No, There are some other routes you can go.  A common one is an MBA - Masters of Business Administration.  This is good for the engineer that wants to go into management.

Some engineering fields are most common as masters or PhD, not BS.  For thses you can come from several BS degrees.

  3. Generally, It is not advised to jump into a different stream altogetherwhile doing your PG..The reason is that your basics will not be strong & it becomes dificult to cope up.. You may end up getting a degree, but you will find it tough once you get into this profession..

Try to be strong in mechanical field.. This is a wide functional area with lot of oppurtunies linked with the latest technologies..

You can think of doing some courses like FEA(finite element analysis) which would ensure that you also get some knowledge about software, while sticking to your core area.
