If I get a Master's in English, is that sufficient to teach high school English at a public school?

Or would I need to take education courses as well. I know I'd have to get an education certificate of some sort if I only had a Bachelor's, but is this necessary if I have a Master's?

  1. No!  Yes, you need teacher training and relevant credentials!

  2. That'll work, but you still are required to take state exams in order to get your certification to teach.  If you apply for an alternative certification program, you can take your tests during your first year of teaching.  That's what I did, and I'm a teacher in TX.  Google alternative certification programs in your state.  That should answer a lot of your questions.

    Good luck =)

  3. yes

  4. If you are working in a specialty area, it would be fine for you to specialize in college and then get a masters in education. That would be acceptable.

  5. A bachelor's in English is enough, however you will have to complete whatever state test necessary to become certified . A Master's degree will enhance your knowledge and give you more pay!!! Also, it is helpful to take some education classes.. because I've known people to major in biology, graduate and teach high school biology but have no idea how about the classroom experience. Good Luck!

  6. It is in West Virginia - you'll have to ask your local BOE

  7. Masters isn't really necessary to teach at highschool.

You better off with a Bachelor major in English and a Dip.Ed (Diploma in Education) which takes an extra year.
