If I get a new Ipod will it erase my itunes?

I might buy a new ipod, but if I plug it into my laptop will my itunes erase? Like if I get a new ipod nano and plug it into my computer can I just take all of my songs and put them on the new ipod? Or will I have upload all the songs again?
