Question:

If I get a prescription filled and insurance helps pay for it, can my parents see it?

I'm just wondering if at some point if my parents get some type of summary of activity showing them which prescriptions I got filled that they would see easily, or maybe they would just have to really go looking for it to find out what I got filled.

  1. They would probably have to ask for a list at your pharmacy. I'd just go to a different pharmacy to get it filled, then they wouldn't know at your regular pharmacy.

The only thing I have ever gotten from any insurance company, was a summary of medical bills they paid. That just shows who, when and how much. I have never recieved a list of prescriptions filled. If you are over 18, then they can't even get prescription info from the pharmacy.

  2. Your parents will receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from the insurance company.  If it like all of the ones that I have seen, it will tell them that a prescription was filled in your name,  who the provider (the pharmacy) was and how much was paid out.  It will not show the actual prescription.

Unless there is a very good reason to keep your parents from knowing what you are putting into your body, I would highly recommend that you don't try to hide this.  If you have a severe reaction to the medicine, your parents would want to be able to tell the EMT's what you have taken.  It could save your life. As a parent, I can tell you that we would like to know what is happening in our children's lives, even if it isn't what we think is best for them.

  3. I've never seen a summary of activity for insurance services like you're asking about.

  4. yes, do go to another pharmacy.

tax time is here and some people get print outs from the pharmacy to deduct the medical expenses, they list everything they filled and how much it cost.

they can not list what they did not fill.
