If I get an emergency c-section?

Well, i'm 24 weeks pregnant, and i'm just curious.

If you get a planned c-section, they cut you horizontaly, right?

But, if you have an emergency c-section, they cut verticaly.

I guess the only reason it matters is because i've heard some doctors tear up muscle tissue whenever they cut verticaly, and when the incision heals, it leaves like large fold in your stomache. It's what happened to my mom when she had an emergency c-section, it's like the skin and muscle around the scar just folded over.

Does this happen with every emergency c-section, or did my mom just have a careless doctor who cut through her muscle without care that it would heal correctly?

  1. yes horizontaly from hip to hip but it would be small from hip to hip its just thats the way  if planned because i had two of them and thats how they did it on me. but you can't even see the scars on me any more and my youngust is two. it takes a while to heel.

  2. If it's a true emergency 'crash' section -- the doctor will do whatever is necessary to get baby out ASAP -- and you won't worry about any cosmetic results because you will have a live baby at the end of it.

If it's just an unplanned section, the doctor would take more care, and, if there is time, do a normal horizontal incisision.

  3. Most Doctors cut horizontally unless it's a life or death situation because of the healing time and health and beauty benefits.

  4. They do c-sections now just above your bikini area straight across I've had three done. One was an emergency c-section but the other were planned, and they were all done the same way...Back years ago they would cut downward but I'm pretty sure they don't do that anymore..

  5. This does not happen with all emergency C-sections. The way they do things has come a long way since your mother had you. Medical technology is increasing daily. The way of doing things is changing daily. The only way I could see this happening now is if it was so much of an emergency that they would have to take it instantly. If you go to the hospital and they monitor you during labor, they can spot an emergency before it really becomes monumental and they need to take it out in a hurried manner. As long as they have a short time to plan, they should be able to give you the bikini cut.

  6. here in uk they do it horizontal wherever possible

  7. The only time they make a vertical incision is if the baby's or mother's life is in imminent danger, and they have to get the baby out within minutes.  A vertical incision is the fastest way to get in there and get the baby out.

My c-section wasn't planned--I ended up having one after 15 hours of labor, when they realized that my son was in some distress when I had my contractions.  But while my OB didn't think that a vaginal delivery was the safest option, the situation wasn't dire or immediate enough to require a vertical incision.

  8. times have changed since your mom had you. the doctors now cut side to side and it is called a binki cut. you can't even see the scar when you have your swim suit on. the only time you see it is when you get in the shower or whatever. i had to have one with my little boy and yea the after fact hurt but it was well worth it. i am pregnant with my second baby and i plan to have another c- section as well. just remember the times have changed they dont do it the same anymore
