  1. Depending on your cable provider, you MAY need a box, but it won't be the one that the government is subsidizing with the $40 coupon program. Any box required will be provided by the cableco, probably with a monthly rental fee.

  2. In the end it depends on what your cable provider decides to do.

Essentially you shouldn't need a converter box if you have cable TV. Cable companies are not required to switch you over in February 2009 as are broadcast TV stations.

It is very likely that cable companies will convert local TV stations Digital signals back to analog to keep you as a customer.

  3. If your TV will support digital signal then you wouldn't be needing a converter. However, you may need to get one if you'll be subscribing to HD (high def) TV.

  4. Absolutely NOT. The digital switchover only applies to signals coming over the air to an antenna. Your cable company may already be providing you with a digital signal, but they convert it to analog coming out of their box.
