If I get health insurance through my employer, what if any information do they have access to?

I'm assuming they don't have access to every doctor's visit, procedure, etc. Do they have access to any information, like what doctors I'm seeing and how much I'm spending through insurance?

(I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan if it makes a difference.)

  1. The only thing that I have to add to the above is this...

If an employer is self-funded, then they may know the claims dollars you are incurring.  (HIPAA privacy laws still apply to the private details of your visits, but since a self-funded employer is actually paying the claims dollars obviously they may be aware of what's being spent on your behalf.)

  2. Deleting my answer because I totally misunderstood it. Sorry!

  3. Because of the HIPPA privacy laws the employer does not have any access to your private health information.

  4. Nope, they do NOT get claims access.  They WILL find out if you add someone or delete someone.  Then it's just names, dates of birth, SS numbers.  THAT'S IT.

  5. Your employer probably has someone that arranged a group insurance plan, but they're not your insurance provider (BCBS is). That puts your employer basically on the same page as you. The only difference is that the employer is a policyholder and/or insured, and you're just an insured. The company only knows the names of the people on the policy.
