Question:

If I go through my own insurance company instead and pay my deductible, will they increase my rates?

I am looking for someone in the business to give some input. I met in a car accident and have verified that the police report indicates I am 100% not at fault. I have however, have been sitting around waiting for three weeks for the other person’s insurance company (actually a bus) to start the process. They have not even appraised the damage.

1. If I go through my own insurance company instead and pay my deductible, will they increase my rates?

2. Will my rates increase even if I wait for the other person’s insurance, since my insurance company is already aware?

I live in VA and have USAA.

  1. Police do not determine fault.

If the bus is a PUBLIC bus, run by a governmental entity, they aren't going to pay your damages, even in the long run - only your deductible.  Ah, the glories of governmental immunity laws.

    1.  If your adjuster agrees that the accident isn't your fault, you won't be surcharged.

    2.  Loaded question - rates CAN increase, everyone can take a hit!  Rates can raise from year to year.  You can lose a loss free discount, and be "downtiered", even if you dont' have an at fault accident.

But you can't be SURCHARGED for a not at fault accident.

Normally, I'd say, ask your agent, but USAA doesn't use agents.  I'd just call them, and ask.

  2. 1. Nope  2.  Nope

  3. USAA is a fine insurance company and I believe that you should direct your question to them.

    Good luck.
