  1. Probably nothing would happen.  But why would you want to go the poorer parts of Paris?  You won't find accommodation there, so you have no reason to be in those areas.

  2. You actually have more chances of being mugged in richer parts of France like Paris and right outside those rich areas, like the few suburbs surrounding Paris.

  3. Not probable at all.  They are used to backpackers everywhere.  It is a very safe country.  I feel safer there than in the United States.  At least you can be assured that the majority of French people are not packing guns around expecting trouble.

If you are staying in a hostel, leave your big backpack there and just take a hoodie and a small day pack if you carry anything at all.  You might want to carry a small day pack for your sunglasses, water bottle, possibly a cheap, compact rain poncho in case of rain, and sunscreen in case you are standing in lineups to see attractions.

Why don't you check out a guidebook, like Lonely Planet?  It's geared for young people.

And try to think well of people.  You need to change your approach.

  4. Not that common. For example, in the more shady parts of paris, just pass without being so fussy or obnoxious so as not to stand out. If anyone even adresses you just be polite, dont recoil or make a face.

The french are not very violent and angressive in nature (pretty carefree,) but if you act like you are avoiding someone shady-looking they will think youre being arrogant and probably cuss u out.

In my opinion its safer that shady places in new york.

  5. i'd say there is a pretty good chance
