I usually shoot 74, 75 at my homecourse (Olympic Club Lake Course) and usually par or 1 over at Harding Park in San Francisco. Do you think I would make a D1 or D2 team?....what should I do?

  1. What is your handicap ? What is your academic standing ? If you are proficient at both and your handicap is in the plus range, you may have the credentials to apply to the D1 or D2 schools. Check with your golf coach and parents and get some counseling from them. Golf alone will not do it for there are hundreds with similiar talent and good marks.

  2. I suggest you pick your college based on your academic and career interests/goals. While you are a very good golfer, at this point, it should probably be viewed as an extracurricular activity. When you have a few good schools picked, visit each of them if possible. While there, talk to the golf coach as part of your overall review of the school. You are good enough to walk on at many DI and DII schools and have a respectable shot at making the team. During your senior year and in the subsequent summer, try to play in several tournaments and get some high quality instruction to sharpen your weakest parts of your game.  Good luck.

  3. handicap doesn't have anything to do with playing college golf.  anyone can put in lower scores than they shot and make their handicaps as low as they want.  the only way to get recognized by college golf coaches is to play in nationally and internationally ranked tournaments.  if you haven't gotten any attention from coaches by now then it might be too late to play your freshman year because signing is in the spring.  i was trying to play in college a few years ago and i was in contact with several coaches before my junior year.  if you still want to try then i would send emails to all of the schools you're interested in, coach's email addresses are available on the school's website, and give them your tournament finishes and your schedule for the year.  look into tournaments on competitive junior tours like the AJGA and the FCWT, info for them is available on the internet.  if you don't get anything this way your other option is to go to a school that you want to and ask the coach about a tryout once you get there.  its not impossible, but most of the people you will be competing with for spots have been in touch with coaches for over a year so you don't have much time to waste.
