Basically I am on my parents car insurance. If I buy a car and register it in my name with their insurance and get into an accident and get sued, would the other party sue me directly or my parents? I don"t have any assets to worry about like a house but they do so in the case I get into an accident and get sued should they worry about losing the house?

  1. i believe if the car is in your name you have to have the insurance not your parents.

  2. ehmm, check this site : http://andyinsurance1234.blogspot.com/

    it will help

  3. It would be you . You are the owner of the car.

  4. You have to get your own insurance if the car is in your name.  You cannot just put it on you're parent's policy.

  5. How big of an accident are you planning on being involved in that someone would lose a house? Anyhow that is what the insurance is for and they will pay. Your parents will not lost their house... but in that big of an accident, most likely you will be dead.

(the car does not have to be insured as poeticju... says. I have insurance on one car that I do not own.. the insurance company knows and I am just added as a driver... no problem)

  6. Answer from a General Insurance Agent

Generally if you are in an at fault accident and get sued. The attorney will sue everyone involved. If they sue for the coverage on the policy then by default they are suing the policy holder.

They can sue the driver, the vehicle owner, the insurance company and the policy holder.

If you are still a minor, An attorney can also sue your parents or legal guardians because as a minor they are financially liable for there acts of their minor children, even if you are not on their policy.

If you are above the age of contractual consent, usually 18 or over. then your parents are no longer personally liable for your acts. However, If you and your vehicle are still on your parents insurance policy,  then they can still get sued because they are the policy holder.

    Take care and good luck.
