If I have a credit card, do I actually have to use it?

Question

Im debating on getting a credit card right now cause Im not sure if I will be reliable when paying the money back. Do I actually have to use the card to build credit or can I just build credit without one single swipe?

If you want to build up your credit, you will need to use the credit card.  Once you receive your card, make only small purchases, and pay the bill in full when it arrives, and  pay before the due date. Doing this routinely over time helps build your credit history as a prompt payer. Also, by paying off the balance in full each billing cycle, you probably wont incur finance charges.

If you are responsible a credit card can be amazing for you. What I do is I only use my credit card. Its all ive used since day 1. I get a paycheque and I pay it off and the rest of my paycheque goes into savings. I would say look at what you make and decide thats all you will spend. If you make $1000/pay cheque spend $800 on credit card and put the rest in savings. Im 18 and I just purchased a brand new car AND a house...because of my credit.

Yes, you need to actually use the card so that you build up a repayment history. If you have the card sitting idly they'll never know what your repayment patterns are like.

Wait until you have some money and just buy something on credit....say a $50 pair of shoes....just pay it off (because you have the $) and it will show that you did. Make sure you pay in full and on time. Don't use more than 25% of your available limit at any given time.

You cannot build credit without using credit.  That being said, if you are not 100% committed to using it responsibly and paying it on time religiously, CUT IT UP and throw it away.  You're not ready.

DO NOT miss a credit card payment.  You'll get trapped in a neverending spiral of debt.

It is up to you whether you want to use it or not but you should use it because that helps build credit and also don't forget the payment at the end of the month or whenever you can. It is easy if you use internet to pay back your credit.
