Question:

If I have a form asking for one fee, and then get a letter asking for more, is that fair?

I recently applied for my provisional licence, sending, as requested, a £45 check. I have just been sent it back with a letter saying the cost is £50. It doesn't sound like a big difference, but I feel a bit cheated. There is nothing on the form stating that they have the right to change this, and I have looked on the website and cannot find anything on fees.

  1. No its not fair but unfortunately they can do this as any increases in fees is passed by the government.

  2. It's not a question of " 'tis'nt fair", you have to pay the current fee, which is £50.

I qoute from DVLA's own website: "You can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post Office® branches. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the fee of £50.00. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD or you may be able to use the premium checking service."

  3. it cost more sending in your passport etc. but if you goto a post office it will cost £45

  4. The cost of a provisional licence in the UK is £50...possibly the original information you had was out of date...

    btw

Where money is concerned we spell "check" as "cheque" here in the UK not as in "check" as the Americans spell it.

  5. If the fee has gone up since you first got the form they have the right, as its the same as when taxing your car you receive a form through the post and it might say £100 for 6 months tax but i have gone to the post office and that has gone up by 2 or 3 pounds before. I argued that this is not what it stated but was told the DVLA had the right to do it!!! Although i am in agreement this is not right if it states that price that really is what you should pay as you would not go into a shop and buy £2 burgers and get to the till and be expected to buy them for £5!

  6. It definitely says £50 on the DVLA website.

Perhaps they've increased the prices inbetween you getting the form and sending it off...  I paid £17.50 for mine...
