Question:

If I have common stock on paper, how would I go about selling it?

I got 10 shares of a common stock many many years ago, now the the stock is worth something I am interested in selling it, the only problem is I have no idea how to.

  1. On the back of the certificate, there will be place to sign.  Also listed will be the name of a company called the Transfer Agent and it should have an address.

    You'll probably need to establish a brokerage account and sign the stock certificate in order to deposit the stock into your new account.  From there, you can place an order to sell the stock.

    Or, often you can send the signed certificate to the transfer agent and they will redeem the stock for you in cash.  You'll want to check with them first though before sending in a signed certificate.
