I've looked up some info about National Insurance numbers and found that I am only allowed one replacement in my whole life! Not good for a scatter brain like me.

Anyway my question is, if I know my number because I've made a note of it, but I've lost the physical card should I request a replacement? Do I need the physical card?

I'm sure the card is somewhere in the house but cant find it at the mo.

  1. (I'm assuming you are in the uk)

As long as you know the number you don't need a card - I lost mine yonks ago and have never used it because I'm sad and I memorised the number :o)

  2. I lost my card years ago, I didn' need it until I finally decided tog et my Drivers License.

You should be OK without it, and if you do suddenyl need it it only takes two weeks to get it.

If yo ukno your NI numb you'll do OK and if anyone needs proof, use a pay slip, P45 or something like that or get a headed letter from HMRC stating your name and NI number..

hope this helps, am also a scatter brain!

  3. I'm old enough never to have had one.

I know the number off by heart and the prospect of being told 'you may only have one replacement' thrills me immeasurably !!

The sheer bureaucratic affront of such a statement hints at a world still capable of buffoonery.

  4. I lost my NI card when I was 16, about 2 weeks after I got it.  I had the number written down luckily, and now I know it by heart.  I've never needed the card, my employers just took note of the number, and if I ever need proof of my NI number I use a pay slip.  I wouldn't worry too much about it, I don't know any adults who actually still have their card.

  5. As long as you have a note of the number it doesn't matter about the card. A lot of people memorise it anyway, i haven't seen my card for 20 yrs! Don't worry about it :)
