Question:

If I have tachycardia, does that mean I'm already getting exercise (cause my heart rate is high)?

I have tachycardia. I did a blood test and heart ultrasound and everything turned out fine. I was told I need to exercise cause I never exercise and I'm pretty lazy (but still pretty skinny). And I know this might be a stupid question.

  1. Tachycardia in a person with documented normal heart and lungs is usually caused by deconditioning (general stress to the body related to lack of activity so any activity gets your heart racing and even something as small as moving around at home, etc. will cause your heart rate to be elevated).  When deconditioning is severe even the resting heart rate is elevated.  The remedy is to start exercising every day.  Walking is a good way to go but start slow and gradually build up your time and speed. Stop when you feel a bit winded to avoid raising your blood pressure too high or causing excess strain to your heart.  In the beginning you might want to do 2 short walks instead of one long.  This will be better for your heart and blood pressure and yet get you started on a reasonable amount of exercise.  You'll be surprised how quickly the exercise gets easier.  Good luck!

  2. if everything seems to be in order, other than a fast heart rate, exercise is definitely the best way to bring down your resting heart rate. tachycardia is a normal response to exercise, but resting tachycardia is not normal. i actually have tachycardia as well!

it's different than exercise though-- sustained tachycardia can give you an enlarged heart and cause other problems. a big part of gaining from exercise is when you rest and recover, but with tachycardia that doesn't happen. it's a nice thought, but your body is not getting any benefit like you would from exercise.

just take it slowly when you start exercising-- definitely your best bet! good luck! =)
