If I have two 42 cent stamps and need to pay 94 cents, can I use them and buy extra postage at the P.O.?

I don't need a whole batch of extra postage stamps, and I don't want to use 1.26 in postage to send a .94 cent letter. Can I put the stamps I have on, and buy the extra postage while at the post office?
