  1. I will just echo the previous answers by stressing that you should backup all important files before you commence.

    Usually the installation of Linux Ubuntu runs silky smooth, and usually there is no need for corrective measures afterwards.

    Backing up before any major changes (and in general on a interval basis) is good computer practice to start with. If anything does go wrong, you will at least have backups of your valuable files.

  2. Yes, there is always a chance of loosing data while installing an OS. You might accidentally overwrite something, choose the wrong option..anything can happen.

    It is always advised to backup critical files on some external media.

  3. I didn't - it was smooth as silk over here.

    It would probably be a good idea to run a few defrag passes, and back up everything important before you start.
