Question:

If I live in WA, which has no income tax, and work in OR, which does, do I have to pay I.T. to Oregon?

....and if Oregon takes it out of my check, is there anyway to get the $ back at tax time?

  1. you pay taxes on the state in which you work, so yes, you have to pay taxes


  2. Yes you do. where ever you receive your normal income from is where you have to pay your income taxes to. Oregon will report your income to the I.R.S. you will still receive your W-2's from your employer.

    When I was in the military stationed in Virginia, I was from the state of Colorado, claimed Texas as my home of residence, still had to pay Virginia income taxes.

    If the OR employer has withheld OR income taxes, then you should file an OR Nonresident return to show your OR wages and withholding.

    Also, states are sharing tax information with the IRS since the federal and state governments are matching information reported to them by third parties to your social security number so you should file a return to avoid receiving a tax notice stating why a return has not been filed.
