Question:

If I major in Creative Writing, can I become an English teacher?

I was thinking before that I might have to major in English just in case my novel-writing doesn't work out. However, I realized that I wasn't actually sure if I couldn't teach English at a school just because I majored in Creative Writing. The plan is that if the novel doesn't work out, then I go back and get my teaching degree. Would I need to major in English to teach it?

  1. It depends on where you are teaching, but the answer is probably no. You should be able to major in Creative Writing and just take the required classes to teach. Some states will even allow you to teach without the classes if you pass the exam.

My daughter wants to do the same thing and I've recommended that she do a dual major in Creative Writing & English. This will give her more options if her first novel doesn't work out. Personally, I don't really think she will have problems because she is an excellent write. And remember, if you major in Creative Writing there are also several other jobs that involve writing, such as marketing and publicity or website writing.

Talk to an academic advisor and take the courses that you think will work best for your degree. Then go with your gut feeling. Have faith in yourself and do a job you like - you'll be working for a long time as an adult and you'll be a lot happier if you love your job.

  2. If you want to teach abroad, then certainly yes. A degree in an English related subject plus a TESL/TEFL Cert is the most common qualification to teach in places like Korea, Greece, Japan, China and so on.

Plus, teaching and living abroad will give you plenty of material for the new novel! :)
