Question:

If I mix different brands of kitty litter will it still work?

I got a new bag of kitty litter and I was just wondering.

Should I empty out the half full litter box before emptying it or should I just put both in the litter box at the same time?

  1. My cat doesn't mind if we get a different brand of cat litter. Once my brother didn't get the right litter. So we just mixed it. He used it all the same.

  2. mixing won't hurt....but one of my cats didn't like it. She preferred to p**s on my clothes until I corrected my mistake!

she only likes the clay clumping kind. I had bought the sawdust clumping kind. For some reason she didn't like it. Well I didn't want to throw the whole bag out so I thought I would trick her and mix the 2 putting more clay than the other. Well it didn't work

  3. yes, it will still work, only if they are two diff kinds, like, one clumping and one non-clumping, but I think all litters today are mostly clumping, it will be fine

  4. I do something similar to that to save me some money.  I take regular cat litter, and mix it with Tidy Cat Crystals.  It keeps it smelling nice, and its cheaper than just buying a $10 bag of crystals that last less than a week.

  5. Whatever u want, mixing wont hurt

  6. Some kitties are very particular, but normally mixing similar styles is certainly all right.  In other words, mixing clumping litter such as Tidy Cat and Scoop Away will work, but Arm & Hammer Scoop litter is a bit different, so I wouldn't do that.

By similar, I mean by granule size for clumping litter.

If your litter is scented (I don't really like to use those types), then mixing in non-scented will dilute the scent, but adding scented to non-scented adds to the scent, and your kitty may not like it.

If you are using non-clumping clay litter, then mixing almost any type of clay litter is all right, but don't mix it with any clumping litter.  It is not that it won't work, just that you will have a mess on your hands and waste a lot of litter (and money).

  7. Mixing them is fine so long as they are both the same type… as in, don’t mix the scoopable ‘sand’ type with regular coarse litter, etc.
