I hate having her sign my checks and having to hunt her down in stores.

  1. How old are you?

Is there a medical/legal reason that you need a payee?

If your disability payments started when you were a minor and you are now of legal age, then tell Social Security that you no longer need a representative payee.  They will help you with the correct form.

  2. Ask the Social Security Administration.  Or go to a website of theirs.

  3. You can request a new payee.  If you are over 18 you do not have to have your mom be your payee. Ask the place you get your check from- they usually have a bank of payees. If your mom is your designated guardian you might have to go through her though.  I worked at a group home where a lot of the residents had guardians. The guardians of these over 18 folks were in charge of deciding on payees.  Some of them chose to have the group home be the payee and some did not.
