  1. Its like with any service you get in your home be it Internet, TV, or Phone. THey need to make sure that it works first off. They also might need to program stuff with your phone lines, check all your jacks, and make sure you have service. Its pretty much 'Good Service' Beacuse if they were not to get in your home, you would have half *** service, and it would prevent people calling and complaining about no service. I mean, comon'! its Comon sense! :)

  2. The first answer is generally correct. The technician will need to make the changes on your old provider and your new one. Hardware wise, the Cable technician will need to install a 'Gateway', which is the box that will act as the originating signal for your phone service. He might need to install a wire that runs from this device to the device located on the outside of your unit which previously held your dial tone. Now, this wire run could be avoided using any available cable pairs inside each of your telephone jacks. This wire run is needed incase you, or the next resident, decides to use a different telephone provider. You could look up other customers who have made the switch and get an idea of how their experiences were by visiting telecommunications forums like dslreports.com .
