  1. Each apartment blocks will have their own rules about animals. One of my brothers bought an apartment in Liverpool in Sydney a couple of months ago and he lives there with his dog.It took him 4 months to find a apartment that allowed animals.

  2. You would need to talk to body corporate and see if the other residents would have a problem with it. There may be a precedent that ban's pets. Basically if no one has a problem with it you can do as you wish.

  3. ask about the bylaws to see if they allow pets.

You should get a set of bylaws when you buy a place.

  4. some places dont let you but some do you should check with people who already live in the building!

  5. As others have said, it depends on the body corporate, which is basically the organisation of owners that manage the building/s. They decide policies on most things at the time the building is built, but can adjust some later with votes etc.

  6. The situation is a bit complex depending on a few variables, so you should check individual bylaws.  It would be best to check with the agent who is selling the place (and, as agents are essentially untrustworthy, have your lawyer or conveyancer check it out before you commit to the purchase)  Have a look here

  7. you need to check with the Body Corporate if they allow pets. Some places, like my current one don't allow dogs, but will allow other pets. I'm in the same situation as you and have a cat and finding plenty of great places to buy, but a wary as the ads don't always specify if they allow pets.
