I am planing to take the practical test but I am a little bit confused.

I am over 21. I have alread got the CBT and passed the theory test. I would like to ride a 125cc geared machine.

If I pass the practical test on category A1 or A2, After 2 years, I will be able to ride any bikes (more than 125 cc) I like. Am I correct? I heard that the restriction is lifted automatically.

Thank you.

  1. If you pass the motorcycle test (category A) on a machine of at least 120cc this entitles you to ride a motorcycle with a power limit of 33hp for 2 years (regardless of engine size) after the 2 years is up you will then be unlimited as to the size of motorcycle you ride,

If you take the practical test on a machine of less than 120cc you will then be limited to an engine size of 125cc developing 14.6hp (category A1 - light motorcycle)

  2. Ok, If you pass your test on a 125 "Learner legal" bike then you are restricted to riding any bike you like as long as it only makes 33bhp for 2 years! This restriction cancels itself automatically, you do not have to notify DVLA or apply to them to have it lifted.

I.e. you can legally ride a honda fireblade as long as its restricted to 33bhp!

This isn't practical cos this will strangle the machine rendering it unusable, I simply used it as an example besides that the insurance would be prohibitive anyway.

If you do your Direct Access test on a bike that makes more than 47bhp, then you could ride any bike you like immediately without a horsepower restriction.

  3. Hi...provided you are in the UK

If you've done your CBT you can ride a 125cc

If you then do your DAS training and take your test you will be able to ride any bike provided you are over 21 and passed on a bike that is 500cc.

you are only restricted for 2 years if you take your test on a smaller bike...or are under 21.

Good luck - it's great fun.

  4. Firstly the A1 test is for moped/automatics so you would be restricted to ride automatics only and 33bhp.

When you pass the A2 test you are restricted to 33bhp. You can still get any bike you like but if the bike has more than 33bhp you will need to fit it with a restrictor kit. The restriction lasts for two years and then you can automatically ride any bike you wish with no restriction.

Personally, if you are over 21 I would recommend that you go for the A test (Direct Access) and no restriction at all.

If you want to take it before the test changes in October - get in asap as most schools don't have much left in the way of tests and you are not very likely to be able to get one yourself online either.

  5. yup thats right....better still pass the direct accses corse and you wont be limited...
