I have an Acer laptop fairly new, running Vista and my screen was broken and it is 400.00 to replace it. I was wondering if I can plug a monitor into it and if it would work with out having to configure settings on the laptop.

  1. It will work, I have done it on mine. Screen cracked.

But you need to configure the video settings and send all screens to the #2 screen, then you should be all set.

If you are using a VGA cord it would be easy. Some computers need a S-video connection, depends on the machine.

  2. If you have a keystroke to turn on an external monitor, you should be able to plug one in and hit that keystroke.  Usually it is something like fn + F5 to toggle to mirror mode, external monitor mode, and external monitor off.

  3. i was just going to say exactly what the first answer stated

  4. Ya it will work just fine, what you need to remember is to hit Function F5 or else it wont transmit to your monitor. Thats how I run my laptop because of the broken LCD so no worries.

  5. No, there is 99.99% of the time settings to configure on the laptop in order to make the external display function.

  6. The above posters are sort of right. IF the laptop is off and you plug in an external monitor/lcd, the laptop will recognize it and use it. However, some laptops will require that you press the FN key(which is near the left ctrl button) and one of the F keys...the key will have a monitor like symbol on it. Pressing that combo will tell the laptop to use the external screen. Once it boots into windows you can go into display properties and set the proper resolution for the external screen
