  1. It all depends on the DVD recorder you buy.  If it has a tuner you probably won't need a cable box.  However there are units out there that do not have a tuner and without one you would need the cable box.  So check carefully before buying.


  2. It depends on which one you get, but most will be able to record basic cable(what you can watch without a box)

  3. tivo just came out with a new one it replaces your cable box(doesn't work on satellite systems)

  4. You can record whatever you watch on tv.  If you have cable box or sat receiver go out from you box to the recorder and then from recorder to tv.
