If I purchase a phone online from the USA, which brand names phones will work in Thailand?

If you need it unlocked, go to MBK shopping mall at Siam.  Several shops on the 4th or 5th floor.  If you just need a SIM card, you can get that anywhere.

As the above answer stated as long as unlocked it should work.  But remember if you have it shipped here your going to paid a tax on it here.

As long as they can be unlocked in Thailand, any brand will work. When I bought my IPHONE at Central Bagna, it was in a AT&T box from USA and unlocked in Thailand.

Never had a problem using it all over the world

Not just any phone will work, it needs to be a GSM network phone, preferably a quad band, but most tri-bands will work as well. The frequencies most used here are the GSM 900Mhz and 1800 Mhz, 3G 2100Mhz will be available soon as well. Phones from AT&T or T-Mobile use GSM, phones from Verizon and Sprint are CDMA phones and although there is a CDMA carrier (Hutch), most American CDMA phones will not work in Thailand. You can get most GSM phones unlocked in Thailand for a few hundred baht or so and install an inexpensive sim card and you're ready to go, or use global roaming from an American carrier, but that's a lot more expensive way to go. It's not the brand, but the type of network the phone is built to work on that matters, most manufacturers make GSM and CDMA phones for the US market.

You need a GSM phone most of those sold in the US are CDMA. The US also has 850/1900GSM. Thailand uses 900/1800GSM so if you have a US GSM phone it would have to be a tri-band phone to work.

Many companies like Verizon will rent you phone for a vacation but the price is pretty high. Best to go buy a phone and a sim card when you get to Thailand.  You can get a setup for about $60 and up at Fortunetown mall, pantip plaza or MBK.
