If I put a dark and lovely hair dye in my hair would i need a lightener to get that color?

My hair is brownish black and i am dying it red with a dark and lovely dye. i just want to know so i can buy the brightener.

If you have dark hair, then the red will barely show up.  If you want to lighten your hair, you need to lift the current color.  My suggestion to you would be to have a professional colorist do it for you.
