  1. In most situations, trees need to be thinned.  On my acreage I am cutting down trees every year.  This not only makes it better for the ones I leave, but it provides me with a source of heat during the winter.   I will probably cut another 10 this spring.

  2. I have to agree with the minority.  The benefits ARE measurable AND significant.

For those that try to deter others from recycling by claiming it's a waste of time and energy...spouting your opinion loudly in a public forum does NOT make it a fact.  It merely verifies that you're too lazy or self-centered to do something for others instead of yourself.

One cautionary note however;  The recycled paper most industries use, and want, is preconsumer paper because it is typically cleaner and cheaper than post consumer.  Preconsumer means that it is usually scraps from industrial units that can sell their waste instead of landfilling it.  While this is still good stewardship, it isn't as effective environmentally as using post consumer paper.

In addition to the listed sources, the below listed website is a wealth of recycling  information.

  3. None.

All you've done is recycle one ton of paper.

  4. Oh, about as much as I cut down for firewood, about an hours worth in my fireplace, not for heat, just to watch.

  5. This is one of those questions that has no correct answer! Not only do trees weigh diff, but what kind of trees & what kinds of filler did they use in the paper itself?

Also if you recycled the paper the trees are already ded, so your "recycle" duty was you saved a tons worth of trash at a landfill (although paper is bio-degradable & would of recycled itself into the ground)

If you are looking for something to recycle that will make an impact- try glass or metal, even plastic!

  6. Agree with "sysengin...) for the exact response.

    (Torryst...) is an idiot!!!!!!!

Additional note not commonly known. Most paper companies now use as much recycled paper they can get their hands on. There is actually a shortage of this in America. Which is rather a good thing considering this current administrations policies on the environment. Most of the fine paper sold these days has some sort of recycled content in it, and the numbers keep rising. Where does (Torryst) think that comes from?

Timber cutting has actually been even or slightly at a decline over the past 8 years. Due mainly to the demand for more environmentally responsible choices.

Great question!!! But it goes further...thanks.

  7. Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution!

  8. hi

i have seen the answers by other members and i just cannot agree with most of them. if you have recycled paper (i ton of it ) by yourself then it is a good and great effort. only can u be specific as to what you did. however as suggested by one of the members it is better to contact organisations who are professionally recycling the used paper and will be doing so in an economical manner.great job keep it up.

  9. Not only have you probably not saved a single tree but the energy you used to save, store and transport the paper possibly outweighed the benefits. ... and everyone's tax dollars went to make it all possible.

Now as a footnote, in heavily urban areas with ample recycling facilites available then the system works better. However it needs a steady supply of clean, plain paper with minimal dyes, inks and staples to be economically sound.

But did you feel better about yourself? Did it make you feel like you "did something to help?" That's the unspoken reason behind much of the movement.

  10. 10,000,000 trees have been saved!!
