  1. i really dont know why but unless you swim since you are like little and do it everyday for excessive amounts you dont really loose alot of weight. you gain alot of muscles. but sure you can try it.  mayb go a little more then 20 laps a day. if you sprint at it u culd be done in 10 min.

    goood luck

  2. 500m per day isn't much of a workout (I swim 3-6 miles per day), if that is all you can start out with then you can go ahead and do it, but I would suggest swimming closer to 1,000-3,000 yards per day. Joining your swim team may also be a good way to get in shape and also have a way to push yourself so you are able to get healthier. You don't loose weight as easily swimming because you are in water which is cooler, so your body wants to keep the fat to stay warm. You can usually get a little bit faster results with walking or running, but you can still loose weight with swimming. Depending on how far you swim, and how fast you pace yourself are all factors that will weigh into how much weight you can loose.

  3. As long as you do it at a moderate to fast pace. Also try breaking it down into 10X50m so you can do them sprints. Going fast burn more calories. Its just like walking vs. running

  4. You've got to start somewhere to get healthy.

I think it's great you want to start being active and eat less fatty stuff. Try to limit how much bread, crackers, chips stuff you eat too b/c that will rack up the calories while you aren't paying attention.

About the swimming for exercise: seven days a week is a great goal, and making it part of your everyday routine will help you stick to it. But if you miss a day here or there, don't beat yourself up over it. I'm a competitive swimmer and have been for years and years. We all miss workouts sometimes. The main thing is not to get off your routine, so get back in the water again as soon as you can (or walking, or playing any other games you could do for exercise, even a hard game of ping pong can burn calories!!)

Start with 500m a day. I liked the suggestion of breaking it up into 10 by 50m because you may need to rest some at first. As you get stronger, add on more distance. For me, 500 would be a short warmup, but for a beginner, it is a fine distance. If you start now, by August, you should be adding on  a couple hundred meters each time. Work your way up to 2000m by early September as a goal! Keep track of what you accomplish and how you feel.

Swimming will make you feel very hungry and tired. Since you are trying to lose weight, make sure you have a healthy, small snack right afterwards so you don't feel tempted to eat too much or bad foot. Fruit or a yogurt or something like that would be a good snack.

You will lose weight if you start being more active and eating less junk food. You will not lose 100% of your body fat if you are swimming b/c your body will try to keep warm, but I don't think that is something for you to worry about right now because you have a long way to go. What I'm saying is, don't worry about the answers that say you won't lose fat in the water. You will lose a lot of fat if you just start getting exercise of any kind and eating better.

    Good luck!

  5. It's true about losing weight by swimming. it's difficult to do. It's thought that the cooler temperature of the water causes you body to want to keep some fat as insulation. however, swimming is a great way to increase your lean muscle mass and metabolism. so you are more likely to burn calories at rest.

500 yards isn't a very significant workout. most swimming workouts are closer to 3000 yards. I would suggest for someone just starting out, do a 30 minute swim (NO STOPPING) and then do another 200 yards easy to warm down. Then get out and stretch.

and for the record, walking is an excellent way to burn fat.
