take the 1200 mi trip...divide it by the miles per gal.  that will give you 48...which is the number of gallons the trip will take.  then multiply that by $3 per gallon and you get $144.

Now, if this is a math problem you are all set...but if this is a real life trip, it will probably be slightly more due to traveling uphill and traffic and whatnot.

Base on the numbers you gave it would cost you about 288 dollars. You divide the number of miles your going to travel (2400) by the amount of miles your car gets to the gallon(25) which equals 96, which means if your car gets 25 miles to the gallon it would take you 96 gallons to drive 2400 miles, so you take your 96 gallons and multiply that by 3(cost of gas) and you end up with 288! :)
