If I take my computer in to get fixed for a Power Source, will they snoop on my harddrive?

My computer went out in a power storm like months ago

and we're finally taking it to get fixed but we're giving it

to my grandfather..

And all my things are still on there.

So what will the repair man find on it?

  1. Well that depends on the repair man!   I personally take no interest in other people's data, I just fix things and move on.  But there's no guarantee, sorry.

You ask what he'll find - well you know what's there, so you decide.  And I can only repeat that most honest repairing folk don't look even at obvious folders, and certainly don't scan for hidden or deleted ones.  But some people do.  What can I tell ya.

Most computer stores will sound an alert if they find material which is illegal and of serious concern.

When giving away a hard drive it is best to low level format it, because you are the only one who can take control of the destriny of your data.  Leave it to others, even family, and there is an industry elsewhere in the world devoted to stealing financial details from old drives.

  2. They most likely won't. You would probably be able to do the repair yourself, you just need to buy the power source from Staples or some computer supply store. But usually the repair people are very good at respecting your privacy especially if you go to a Best Buy or you take care of it directly with the computer company.
