Of course I do, but just hypothetically, would you think less of people if you knew they didn't tip? I"m NOT in Australia where it's ok NOT to tip, by the way.

  1. Yes, I would, and the waitresses would even think lesser_not even the right word:)  Most waitresses only make 2.13 an hour so they are depending on the patrons to tip them so that they can make  a living.  You know they wouldn't be that nice if the money wasn't depending on it.  Then if they knew you didn't tip, most of them would hate to see you coming.

  2. I would definitely think less of you.  As many others have said, it's the only way that servers make money.  In most states, servers make $2.13 per hour and most chain restaurants require servers to claim 10% of their sales for tax purposes, even if their tips don't add up to 10% of their sales.  So, not only would you be not tipping, you could also be forcing someone to pay taxes on money that they didn't actually make.  I consider not tipping to be stealing.  Of course, if your server gives you terrible service, you have every right not to tip, but even if the service was just OK, you should always tip.

  3. I would. That is the only way a wait person makes a living. Tips! Be generous if you have good service.

  4. It's not that I wouldn't think less of you, I wouldn't think of you at all. Wouldn't give you the time of day.

  5. Yes, you don't have to be "over generous", most of the time it's more the "thought" that counts...

  6. YES I would!! you just took advantage of someone. They are working for $2.13 an hour (which is before taxes are taken out) and used them for about an hour.

  7. No you cheapskate.

  8. Please.  I could hardly think less of you than I do now.

  9. To each their own. It is not a law that one must tip-but it is a nice gesture. Tips are important to a restaurant employee. Wages are far less.

  10. No of course not.

  11. Tipping varies by country. And in some place it’s considered rude. But in the states it is the primary source of income for your waiter or waitress. So if you lived in the states (if you are a tourist I might find it forgivable since the customs may be different where you are from) I would think less of you. If you can’t afford a tip then go to McDonalds. :)

  12. Yes, I would think less of you. Being cheap or stingy is a poor quality to have. I try to not surround myself with people like that.

  13. In the USA where everyone knows that wait staff are (legally) paid well below the mandated minimum wage for other jobs, if you NEVER tipped, frankly – I would think less of you.

The IRS even requires waiters and waitresses to claim some minimum amount on their 1040, so it IS part of their anticipated income.

The only time in 25 years that I have ever "stiffed" someone was when she asked ME if I needed anything and I asked for some more iced tea.  It never came.  After 10-15 minutes, I gestured that I needed the check so I could leave and she gave me a "one minute" sign with her index finger, but never got back to me.  After about five more minutes, I just went to the register and paid the total amount for our "usual" lunch.  My "usual" waitress was on the register, so she trusted me with the amount.  The bimbo who put me off never waited on me when I went to that restaurant again.  It was her loss, because I'd usually leave a $5 tip on a $10-12 lunch tab.

Since I have known many young people who worked in this kind of job, I always overtip.  I mean, if you are eating a $20-25 dinner, what's another dollar in the tip to you anyhow?  Tip at least 20% and maybe more.  I wouldn't "require" this of anyone else, though.

  14. No I wouldn't think less of you, but if I was dining with you and in my opinion the service deserved a tip, I hope you wouldn't think I was trying to undermine your principles if I left a tip of my own.
