  1. Well, you seem to have answered your own question, since you state that you passed.

Most urine tests given by employers only test for what is often called the NIDA 5, which is five classes of drugs. Of the NIDA 5, only one class, the opiates, includes a drug which is routinely given legally: codeine. That class also includes morphine, which, along with cannabis (a different class in the testing) are the only other drugs which are ever prescribed legally in the US. Morphine and cannabis (actually THC) are generally only dispensed legally to very sick people. Morphine is given for pain, and THC is given to people like cancer or HIV patients to help with nausea and low appetite.

What I am saying is that a standard drug test isn't even looking for Valium. There are tests which include benzos, but the more things you test for, the more expensive the test is. Most employers just want to know if you are taking illegal stuff which is generally bought on the street, so they don't test for things like Valium or Xanax (benzodiazepines), because they are so widely prescribed in the US for anxiety problems and for other medical issues.

If you are taking something like codeine or Valium legally, you generally just take the bottle with your prescription information with you when you go for your test. Since they can see that you are taking it under the supervision of a doctor, they don't care, unless you are doing something dangerous, like driving heavy equipment of have a CDL (commercial driver's license).

If you take one 10 mg pill of Valium that you got from a friend or bought on the street, it usually clears your body in about 4-5 days, though it can show up in urine tests as far out as 5-6 weeks. That's pretty rare in a normal, healthy person, though. People who still show signs from a one-time use of 10 mg of Valium a week after taking it have problems with the drug clearing their system.

All in all, what employers are looking for is street drugs. Generally, they don't care too much about pharmaceuticals, although that is changing because those drugs are being abused more and more these days. Had you not added that you passed the test, I still would have predicted that you would pass it fine, simply because I doubt they were even looking for it. It's just a waste of money to test for something which is given to people on a regular basis by doctors.

The one thing you do need to be aware of is that the more you take, and that's of anything, the more likely it is to show up in a urine test. You took one 10 mg dose, and it sounds like you only took it once. If you took that same dosage daily, for a long period of time, there would be more evidence of it in your urine, and it would be more likely for them to find it IF they were testing for it.

I take 10-20 mg of Valium every day, so if I took a drug test which was looking for Valium, they would find it. I have a legal prescription for it, however, so an employer couldn't do much about it, unless it was compromising my ability to be safe at my work site. None of that matters, though, since I don't work ;)

If you have to take random drug tests, just be careful about what drugs you take. Remember that street drugs like marijuana or heroin or meth are a lot more likely to be found on a drug test because they are part of the categories on a NIDA 5 test, which is the common test. Keep your consumption of any drugs low, and you'll be more likely to pass random urine tests.

    Best of luck.
