If I turn in something lost to the police, do I get it if no one claims it?

I found a diamond ring in a parking lot today and I turned it into the police. They took down my name and address and took it. If no one comes in to claim it after a certain amount of time do I get to keep it? If so how long do I have to wait?

  1. a month or so.

  2. I doubt that they'll let you have it....

  3. yes

  4. It depends where you live and the prescinct's codes.

Just depends on how they do things.

For the more formal ones, you ahve 30 to 90 days.

For informal stations or smaller towns (not sure where you were) it could be whenever they decide to....or never.

  5. That depends on the departments policies. (and what was found) They  may donate some of the items to charity. It all depends & not every department does the same things.

  6. You shouldve posted a found ad instead,  id imagine the Dept will keep it. W/ found pets its 60 days, i assume it would be similar w/ found stuff.

  7. I'm not too sure, but I think after a few weeks they may give it to you. But good on ya, that was a great thing to do! If I lost my diamond ring, I don't think I would even check the police station, I'd be sure nobody would turn in a lost ring.

People still have some good in them! awesome

  8. Im not sure if they will give back try calling and asking next time you should hang onto yourself and adv the police and post found adds everywhere Im sure whoever lost it would give a reward especially for a diamond ring you get 10 stars you are a very honest person people are generally not this honest anymore

  9. Yes, if you turn something in and it is not claimed then you are allowed to keep it.  Not sure on the timeline, and even so I bet every agency is different.

  10. Usually it's 30 days.

  11. Theoretically yes.  However, if the item is very valuable or if some cop wants it, it will mysteriously disappear and you will get nothing....

  12. Actually putting a found ad in the paper in the area where you found it saying to contact the police to identify it would make a great deal of sense.    So would looking up the web site for the newspaper in that area and reading the classified ads to see if someone is advertising it as lost and offering a reward.    If they are direct them to the PD and you should get the reward.   Different jurisdictions probably have different waiting periods but yes the finder most generally can claim unclaimed found property.  Just ask the pd where you turned it in how long.

  13. yes you do. 3 weeks. You're a lucky person - and an honest one!

  14. Yes. They have 90 days to claim it. If they don't, it's all yours!
