I have a built into my laptop Integrated 802.11b wireless LAN card that allows me to connect to my linksys wireless router G

so my question is because my wireless card says B and my router is G does that mean if i get another wireless adapter that is G rate my internet will go faster??? or do the b and g dont really mean anythig.

i am a little computer illiterate so please help, but i thought the letters meant the speed and since my wireless router is g i am not taking full advantage of the speend because i have a "b" wireless card. I was thinking of buying a cheap usb wireless adapter G believing my internet speed will improve...will it and by a lot or a little thanks!!!

  1. No, most internet service is 1-6mbps, and 802.11b runs at a theoretical 11mbps (actrual throughput is less due to headers and encryption).  g is better for sharing data between computers, but in your case the bottleneck is the gateway to the ISP.

  2. i dont think so

  3. You probably won't see much difference in your Internet speed, but if you have other computers (maybe a desktop) on your network then you'll see faster connections to those.

"B" connections top out at 11Mbps, around the same speed as pretty old wiring.

Any other connection type (including "G") will have a top speed of at least 54Mbps, and some can go higher.

Whether you see any Internet speed improvement depends on how fast your Internet connection is - if you're on DSL, your top speed is probably 6Mbps or less, so approximately half of your "B" speed. If you're on a cable modem or in a college dorm, your Internet connection speed may be quite a bit higher, so then you'd see a speed improvement.

"G" and the other newer protocols can also provide much better security that "B" - there were some security issues with B that weren't discovered until after it'd been around for quite a while, so with G (and newer operating systems - at least Windows XP or fairly current Mac or Linux systems) you can use WPA or (better) WPA2 for much better security.

These days using the security of "B" is kind of like only locking your screen door rather than the front door.

  4. no i'm afraid not. unless you have the fastest internet in the world to connect to that wireless card won't help you with the internet. the only thing it would help you with is if you were transferring files form one computer to another on the same wireless network. Sorry :o(

    Hope I've Helped
