  1. DSL doesn't use phone lines, the run a seperate line to your house.  Your bill will be a flat rate per month, whatever your particular DSL company charges you.

You must have been dialing a long distance number for your phone internet.  Before you use phone internet always make sure that they have a local number for you to dial in to, thus no charges.

  2. Sorry, Mike O, wrong answer.  The whole point of DSL ( ADSL ) is to re-use the existing phone line in a modern way, and this is by putting the data on a radio frequency instead of an audio frequency, which is why everyone that has DSL has little filters to separate the signals.

You can get a high phone bill with DSL if you don't shop carefully.  Many Internet Providers ( IPs)  offer phone and data plans, and the phone part is just VOIP, like Vonage.  You must have  DSL speed to get the best out of VOIP, and VOIP is super cheap to most countries. Read the fine print!   I use Telus for DSL and Vonage for VOIP, and I pay just $20 monthly, but I don't phone Cuba or the Middle East.
